Polaroids: Memory of the Instant
A book project
Polaroids: Memory of the Instant is a visual memoir composed of approximately
164 original Polaroids made from the mid-1990s to the present.
Many of these Polaroids began as tests before exposing conventional film. Yet
I often found that these test images felt more direct and alive than the finished
photographs: the subjects were more relaxed, the colours less predictable, and
the distance between us diminished.
The book will move freely between my professional and private worlds: musicians,
Formula One drivers, surfers, actors, models, friends, family, journeys and
places connected to memory. Recognisable figures, including Daft Punk,
Lewis Hamilton, Niki Lauda, Kelly Slater, Patrick Dempsey, Sebastian Vettel,
Andy Irons and Stephanie Gilmore, appear alongside intimate photographs
whose significance is entirely personal.
Almost all the photographs are previously unpublished. They will be presented
as unique physical objects, preserving their borders, colour shifts, fading,
damage and chemical accidents.
It is a project about the accidental photograph becoming the
essential one, and about light being transformed into memory.
